I really appreciated the way the author was able to get information across in an accessible way. I feel like I learned a lot about the process of treatment and diagnosis, as well as differences between the Japanese healthcare system and the Canadian one. I thought it touched on an important factor, that is, what people can do if they don't have a supportive family of origin to rely on. It's surprising to me that guarantors and witnesses with some degree of relation are required in Japan.
The art style was cute and I liked the mix between cartoon depictions of people and realistic ones--and the ones clearly influenced by the author's eromanga background. The details of her knowing about certain things due to BL research were really funny. I really sympathized with her having to miss fandom events due to her sudden diagnosis and treatment.
Although it's sad to think now that the author has passed away, I was glad at the end of the manga that she had gone into remission--she did end up getting a few years longer than they initially thought. I hope all the caring people in her life are doing well these days.

The book was a lot more charming and sweet than I expected. I loved seeing Hilnama’s little asides and thoughts. As a Touken Ranbu fan I loved the references to it too.

She is very vulnerable but still really shows her love for the people that matter to her. It’s nice to see how much empathy she has for people around her even while she’s going through something difficult herself.

There is a good mix of info about cancer diagnosis and treatment as well as just her daily life and relationships. I never felt that it was trying to make me feel sad or inspired or any crap like that.

I knew I’d give it 5 stars even before I went and found out Hilnama ended up passing away, so rest assured this is not some pity rating.

Wow. I... This manga seriously made me feel like a slab of meat pummeled by a meat tenderizer... It just hit so many sore spots for me and ultimately, I feel so close to this author who doesn't even know I exist.

Let me start by saying that about halfway through the manga, I looked up Hilnama, because I really like her art style and I wanted to see if anything else she's written was translated into English. I wasn't successful in finding other series by her, but I did find out she passed away at home on December 16, 2022. And I've only been her fan for a day, and her personal memoir touched me so much that I'm grieving her loss. I hope someone checks on her husband. According to the manga, he really struggles with depression, and I just really hope someone keeps him company while he's grieving her.

Hilnama's story resonated a lot for me. She walked away from an abusive family and found a home in her in-laws. She worried a lot about unwelcome visits from her parents, or even that they would find out when she did not want them to. She worried about her husband, who had to pick up almost all of the housework because she was unable to do any of it anymore with how weak she was.

And then in the afterword, she celebrated officially being in remission as of December 2020. It's not clear why she passed, but she made it two years after remission. I'm not completely sure what year she was diagnosed, but she definitely made it longer than the doctor's original estimate of 30 months!

It just makes me so sad to read this the day after she passed.
