Okay… WTF DID I JUST READ? Meant to be a thriller but I think it’s more of a suicide note when you start getting a grip on it but this book isn’t meant to get a hold on it bc you finish it and find yourself searching late at night on Reddit for someone to explain the ending properly or the whole book in my case. People on Goodreads say that you need to read it twice to understand it but once is enough for me, glad I got it down but wouldn’t pick it up again.

A book that stays with you… I’m giving it 4 stars bc of the eerie/macabre atmosphere but I wish I could give it 1 star bc it isn’t such a big of a deal, it’s just very effing clever.

If goodreads had half stars I think I’d give this a 4.5.

Reid doesn't rely on gruesome details or jump scares to scare you in this one. At the start, I thought, This is not at all what I thought I was getting into. It's not even scary, and this car trip is taking forever. However, I couldn't stop reading. Very slowly, this creepy, unsettling feeling set in—so gradually you wouldn't even notice. You'll be afraid but won't really know why... I'm still unsure if I do know, even after finishing the book.
I'll be honest: this book won't be for everyone. But I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy A24 movies and weird, creepy, ambiguous horror.
I think this book would really come to life in a re-read. Will update if i do re-read.

It’s not heart-stopping or intense or bloodcurdling or graphic or violent. No jump scares. To me, these qualities aren’t usually scary. Something that disorients, that unsettles what’s taken for granted, something that disturbs and disrupts reality—that’s scary.

Every once in a while, I'll come across a book that forces me to realize that there are some forms of literature, some plot devices, some narrative twists, some entire modes of thought, that the vast majority of creative types haven't even acknowledged, much less explored. I'm happy to report that this is one of those books.

3.75 rounded to a 4.

Okay, I went into this having already watched the movie, it was also the audiobook and if you read, you know that knowing those 2 things makes a difference.

I’d like to first off say that this book was boring, but the movie definitely did the book justice. And the audio book reader(s?) also did an AMAZING job. I feel like all 3 forms of this media are definitely different experiences from each other.

I think the book takes a long time to get anywhere and genuinely only makes sense within the last 3 chapters. The interludes are interesting but don’t really do much. If I hadn’t have seen the movie, I would probably rate this much lower on confusion alone. But it was really interesting, very descriptive, and made me cry, so it deserves a 3.75
