Overall the book was very good. Had a nice mix of exposition and narrative parts. The narrative parts were very gripping, and the exposition laid a good basis for the political landscape in Yugoslavia during the war.

I really enjoyed the book. I tend to enjoy a lot of stories about WWII. This was fascinating because it was in a part of the world that not many people hear about with the war effort. It is usually Europe or the Pacific. It definitely brings up the blurred lines that went on between the allies and communism. I enjoyed learning about a country that I didn't know really any history about and how they bent over backwards to help the Allied soldiers who were shot down.

I debated between 4 and 5 stars for a long time. The story is incredible and it was the story itself that made me eager to keep reading. I decided on 4 stars because the writing got muddy in the middle 1/3 of the book and seemed to lose sight of the point. There were still many interesting facts in the middle section, it just seemed a little disconnected to the point of this book.

The story of a series of daring rescues of downed American (and other Allied) airmen from Yugoslavia during WWII. The actual story of the rescues is phenomenal, the book itself is mediocre. The vast majority of the book is spent discussing the political history of 20th century Yugoslavia, the origins of the CIA, and the personal backstories of half a dozen Americans involved on either side of the rescue. After 3/4 of the book, we finally get to the story of the rescue, which was actually a 9 month long series of separate missions, and he tells the story of the first one in fabulous detail with very heightened (and warranted drama). Then he basically says, "and they did it over and over for 9 months without a hitch." I found that left the entire story feeling incredibly flat. I dunno. I'd give it 3/5 stars overall. Very important to get the story out, I just wish it was told better. Recommended.

5 stars! I've read so many world war II books and never came across this amazing story. I couldn't put down this book. Literally! I read most of it, uninterrupted, at the airport and then on my flight from CA to Europe. It was that good. Every once in a while you come across a book that is so well written that you want to read all the other books by the author (regardless of topic) and that is how I feel about this author. Granted, the story was captivating and so the author had help with great material, but I will soon be reading other books by Gregory Freeman.
