Beatrice's mother calls her to tell her that her sister went missing. Bee gets not the first plane back from NY to London intending to lecture Tess the first chance she gets. Unfortunately, Tess is discovered dead leaving behind plenty of secrets. Her death is ruled a suicide but Bee can't accept that. She quickly goes into inspector mode and begins to question everyone who came into contact with Tess in the past year. And there are many to suspect - her married lover, her stalker, big pharma. The interesting thing of the book is its style. The whole letter is a love letter to Tess. Bee speaks to Tess, bringing her along, exploring every thought with Tess in an effort to explain Tess's death to her. It's an interesting style and - though at times it felt too kitchy,

A three star read during the book but jumps up to four because of the twist at the end. I was going to give it three, but since I knock stars off for sucky endings I think I can do the reverse. probably a 3.5 really.

Editing to add:
Nope. Three stars. I thought about overnight as you do when you can't sleep. I was difficult to follow the writing for the first half of the book. The points of view and someone telling someone, telling someone a story, back to "now", back to then. The end was exciting but a lot of the journey was bleh. I would not recommend people to skip it, but looking at the other books I've given four stars to then nope. Three.

A fantastic and haunting novel. As Bee goes on her search for her sister, Tess, we are pulled along into the story with her. Lupton allows us to fall in love with Tess through the words of her sister, and we are tormented by the fact that we know nothing can be done to save the girl we've just met and don't want to let go of. So very quotable with its poetic prose, and an ending that will leave you tearing your hair and out of your mind. I knew it was surrounded by quite a lot of hype, but I never expected it to excel to such standards as these. If you're searching for the next modern classic, I think you've just found it.

Zo niet het einde wat ik verwacht had! Door de opbouw is het laatste 3/4 stuk erg spannend en zat ik vol in het verhaal maar het einde… vond ik wat afgeraffeld en snel in elkaar gebreid.

Initially I found this book hard to get into. I wanted to read something different from my usual crime whodunnit books, so thought this would be different, but not too different. It tells the story of Beatrice, who is called home from America to London on the news that her sister Tess is missing. The mystery books that I have read in the past are told through the eyes of the lead detective and his/her side kick, but this details Beatrice's experience of what she goes through and how she feels to have her most important person in the world, her sister, go missing and not have any clue as to what happened to her. She describes the relationship that they had and how she is going to find her through letters to Tess. It did take me awhile to warm to this book, but once I got into it, I fell in love with Beatrice and her struggle. Amazing book, cant wait to read Lupton's next.

This book was infuriatingly average. It’s written in a bizarre and difficult to follow first person-esque letter to her sister; who is also you the reader. I found myself struggling to understand the jumps in narratives during the first quarter of the book, not really believing or liking any of the characters in the middle portion of the book, and genuinely angry at the “twist” at the end.
Had to force myself to finish this book, as my toxic trait is not being able to walk away.
Don’t trust anyones taste in books if they rate this any higher than 2 stars.
