I loved the Tudor atmosphere and historical details the story rollicks along at great pace with a large cast of plausible characters.
I liked this a lot more than Sansom's world war two books, a lot easier to read.

Another fab book by Sansom, basically a rip roaring murder mystery and investigation into the appearance of Greek Fire!

An enjoyable mystery. I felt that the middle was slow, and knowing how the end was going to work out politically reduced a lot of the suspense. But Sansom really knows how to give you the feeling that you are in Tudor London. There was clearly a ton of research used to create a sense of place and time that did not feel like a history lesson, it just joins seamlessly with the narrative.

I would give this a 5, but there was a section towards the late middle where it seemed to be dragging on a bit. Other than that, great book. I had previously read Sovereign and i think this book is even better. Had no idea who the "bad guys" were. I almost don't think it mattered, though. This was more about the entertaining investigation and the great characters.

There’s much to like here, but in the end, it went on way too long and became unnecessarily grisly.
