So this is the first book by this author that I've read (and I realize this is a kind of spin-off from a longer series). So I didn't have any background knowledge about the universe or the characters.

I thought the world-building pulls you in, and there seems to be a lot yet to discover. Some novel ideas here (eg the super high age of some of the characters), and it mixes vampires, deities, demons etc. The story is pretty fast and I adored Ian (love a good slutty MC); the pairing with Veritas was a good match, though her internal thoughts are sometimes a bit eh (specifically: thinking this is just a fling for him when he's shown multiple times that he genuinely likes her).

I found the pacing here good, though I wasn't as immediately addicted to the story as I've been with previous books. That said, I immediately started on the next book in the series and am eager to see more of this couple.

Spice level: a good 3/5, very nice scenes, especially if you like a dusting of kink.

Jeaniene Frost has finally given us a glimpse into the life of Ian, master vampire and sire of Bones. He is shameless, full of himself, and living a life full of sin. When he’s tracked down by the vampire’s equivalent of a cop, Veritas, things get heated. She’s on a mission to destroy a demon. He’s made more enemies than he can count, including the demon Veritas is hunting. This is the story of the two of them coming together to conquer this evil.

I will admit that I liked the idea of the bad boy vampire Ian falling in love. However, as interesting as Veritas’s backstory is, I was disappointed that demons were introduced so seriously into the world that Frost has built. It was a fast-paced story that was at times too much detail. Most of the sex scenes were overly violent - due to vampire powers - and I wasn’t a fan so I skipped a lot of it. It will be interesting to see where this new story arch leads.
