Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert

Talia Hibbert is one of my insta-read authors. The way Hibbert writes OCD, anxiety, and all the myriad things her books address make her characters so freaking relatable, even when they're eighteen years old trying to get into college.

Obviously, this as a YA novel lacks the spiciness that we usually see from a Hibbert book, if you're only reading one of her books for her impeccable spice, it's best to skip this one.

HOWEVER the usual spice is replaced with some excellent enemies to lovers pining and banter, some really fun situations (for the reader not the characters

2.75 stars! (im just bein picky tho)

pros:
"I have a theory that seventy percent of the global population wants to kiss you, and that’s a conservative estimate.”
“But you’re the only one who gets to do it. Lucky you.” His hand slides into my hair. His thumb traces the curve of my jaw. “Okay. So kiss me.”
Something nervous squeezes in my stomach. My heart winces. “But—”
“Just kiss me. That’s all. What’s a little tongue between friends?”
Friends. Just like I wanted. Right? “You’re ridiculous.”
“You’re beautiful.”"

cons:
- slow start
- long chapters
- lots of "real world" things mentioned such as social media, tik tok etc.

would i recommend it? prob not but read it if you'd like :)

I’ve always enjoyed Talia Hibbert’s books, and this one was definitely cute, but I think it was a bit more drawn out than it needed to be. That said, to be fair, I think that could be due to having listened to it on audio – and the first quarter of the story felt very slow.

It could also be due to the fact that I haven’t read many YA lately, but even still, it was a cute story with characters representing mental health from all directions, and I truly appreciated that.

When two high school students find themselves in a competition for college scholarships, these two once-best-friends turned enemies reconnect… but now it might be more than just friendship. But what happens when things start to spiral? Can they handle the tumultuous events of life in their relationship? Can they do it together?

Tropes:
- Forced proximity
- Friends to enemies to friends to more
- High school/ YA
- Mental health rep: OCD
- LGBTQIA+ rep

I'm a Talia Hibbert fan, but it took me a while to get into this one. Once it got into the "are we more than friends" plot point, pacing picked up and characters really started to develop.
