Maya Angelou's memoir of growing up mainly in the South, and also in St. Louis and California. This is an honest book told in a deceptively simple way, but it's very deep in the issues it takes on along the life of a young black girl in the first half of the twentieth century.

This is another book where I didn't enjoy myself reading it, but I do think it tells an important story, and has important lessons to be learned.

An autobiography
I chose this read because of its notoriety, and after finishing I would recommend it to anyone. Angelou's writing style is beautiful and her subject matter is daunting at parts and bursting with vitality in others.
