I've read the zoo issue maybe a hundred times, I still laugh out loud at it.

I read somewhere that this the story that got "Frank Castle his balls back."

Totally agreed.
After dreadful attempt to push Frank into flashier, pulpier supernatural storylines, Ennis brough him back to original premise:

description

Welcome back, Frank is pure Ennis- dark humor, not pulling punches heroes and crazy plot works perfectly for Punisher which is why his stories are the best in run.
This is also a great place to start for those who are thinking about giving Frank a chance- continuity isn't problem with Punisher and portrayal of Frank here is the most genuine, imho.

Definitely one of my favorites.

The birth of the version of Punisher that most folks are aware of today. This graphic novel pulls no punches with the violence or dark humor. The Punisher (and Garth Ennis) at his absolute best. A must read for any Punisher fan or fans of vigilante movies like Death Wish.

Punisher

An enjoyable read. I could see that the 2004 movie took some inspiration from this one, and even the scene in Season 2 of Daredevil in which Frank ties up Daredevil and gives him a choice has been taken from this story.

After Preacher and this one, Ennis is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. Took me some time to get used to Dillon's art in Preacher, but did not face any such problem in this book.

There were some pretty badass moments, but sometimes it felt like the character is a bit overpowered.

I love the Punisher! And Garth is awesome writing on this. I was not as hip to the art but it wasn't terrible.

There is action is wonderful. And the deaths...were dark and creative.

Awesome, amazing. A must read for Punished fans.

i thought the point of the punisher as a "superhero" was the fact that he was just a man with a gun and no moral code. perhaps this notion comes from me first encountering the character through film instead of paper (funny story: the 2004 film was loosely inspired by some aspects of this storyline)

the thing is--

--this is the most widely gringo hero that could possibly be. like, he could not even exist outside the us because that amount of weapons by a civilian is not conceivable in any other place. period. and, since i'm not an american, this character did not feel real or grounded or grittier. it was just an unnecessary amount of explosions and gun-fire.

now, i know it makes no sense complaining about the amount of violence when reading the punisher. but i suppose it's a legit commentary considering this is my first comic-book and every single other interaction with him as a character has been through the screen. i'll probably pick up the next volume--but i can already guess it will not blow up my mind.

Straight up, this is the only good book of Ennis' run on The Punisher. The rest of his Marvel Knights run was spewing bodily fluids from all his orifices on the characters of Wolverine, Spider-Man, and Daredevil - especially, of all characters, Spidey.

I never really understood The Punisher. I like my heroes (even the antiheroes) ripe with morality. This is the first proper Punisher storyline I explored and I really enjoyed it! Ennis brings a really distinctive voice to the character and I felt a suprising amount of empathy given that we're basically watching a one man with many guns rampage through humans.
