Chester and Harold here being more sophisticated than most actual people in my life.

Really missed Bunnicula, though.

Cute but didn’t love it the way I love the original.

This was a really good story but setting up the plot took up perhaps the first 40% of the book. I had no problem but Em had a harder time getting into it until we hit 40%. She realized, hey this is a mystery and was excited and curious. The rest of the book went quickly. It was nearly twice the length of the prior book in the series.

That said, I loved the variety of characters in the form of cats and dogs. Em loved that I gave them all distinctly different voices. By the time we finished, she was ready to hear more. She wanted another from the same series. I think we'll need to mix in a different series after book 3.

I'd recommend this book as a read aloud. An adult reader will laugh at the puns that may go over the listener's heads but its a great opportunity to help listeners understand and notice puns.

Although I loved the werewolves and the murder mystery was a lot of fun, Bunnicula is still my favorite character and I was really disappointed that he was only mentioned briefly at the beginning of the story :(

"The Monroes have gone on vacation, leaving Harold and Chester at Chateau Bow-Wow -- not exactly a four-star hotel. On the animals' very first night there, the silence is pierced by a peculiar wake-up call -- an unearthly howl that makes Chester observe that the place should be called Howliday Inn.
But the mysterious cries in the night (Chester is convinced there are werewolves afoot) are just the beginning of the frightening goings-on. Soon animals start disappearing, and there are whispers of murder. Is checkout time at Chateau Bow-Wow going to come earlier than Harold and Chester anticipated?"

Seems like the first in a series is always the best, the unusual idea strikes you as fresh.

Bunnicula is not in this little story, but Harold and Chester are. Funny how I can buy a Vampire Bunny but not a Werewolf Dachshund.

Will read another Bunnicula series though.
