Probably 3.5 but couldn’t give 4 stars. Still, another good entry in a series I’m enjoying. The more books in the series I read the more I become a fan of Davenport.

FIRST LINE REVIEW: "The chairman of the board pulled the door shut behind him, stacked his rifle against the log-sided cabin, and walked down to the end of the porch." This was a perfect, fast-read piece of escapism. Just the thing to launch me into the summer. And this one was definitely one of the better books in the series.

If these were named differently, I'd call this one "Relapse", because that's an accurate summary of what occurs for the both the protagonist and the author. This may be because the author wanted to shake things up as it were, but I wonder how many times that can be done while maintaining a semblance of realism for the characters and their well-being. There's a scene where the protagonist goes over his numerous wounds from being in the line of duty where he has killed several times and has been almost killed as many times. As usual everyone he knows is in danger, as they tend to be, this time because for some reason a newspaper wrote a feature article detailing his every relationship. At one point it's noted by a character that it's too dangerous to know him and he wants to transfer out, which would be an eminently reasonable decision. This one has a weak start, strong middle, and silly end.

I didn't love the first few chapters but after it picked up steam I couldn't put it down. This is my favorite so far

Very tense and twisty...and totally worth the hilarious situation Lucas finds himself in at the end.

I really enjoy the Sanford Prey books. However, I wish Goodreads had a differentiation between literary fiction and entertainment. (Yes, there is overlap; yes, the difference is subjective; move along.) I started The Prague Cemetery by Eco immediately after, so I'm reluctant to give this book four stars, although it was enjoyable and suspenseful and did everything it was supposed to do, and then some. The Prague Cemetery is a different kind of fiction, and evokes a completely different response, and it, also, would get four stars. But there really is no comparison, and it annoys me that these two books are lumped into the same category.

Finally, another 5-star Davenport novel! This one was good because unlike most of the previous Prey books, the killer isn't revealed until later on in the book. Because of this, Sandford really nailed the suspense and intrigue. I think he's a better writer (and Lucas is a better character) when he's in detective-mode. Moving on to the next book shortly...
