Slower than the first book but set up the remainder of the series really well and got a nice deep dive into some characters like Tyrion, Sansa, and Arya. Also had a fantastic ending and made me really excited to read the third one

This book was more intense than the one before. The author put us inside battles with all its details. He showed us what men can do for power and how far they can go. The hunger for power was all over the book. each king fighting to keep his shiny crown.
The book presented us with different characters of kings and queens, with the lies they have around and the lies they tell themselves.
It was a long book and it took time to finish but it was worth it.
The only problem is the hard time we get to keep up with all those old complicated names and places. It is also hard to keep up with the maps and location of battles.

This was a great follow up. This story just keeps getting better. Love some characters; Love to hate others. LOVE this series.

It's pretty clear that this book is not for slow readers. I knew that, so I can't really blame myself. It was still really slow going, and it's probably going to be a while before I take a crack at the next one.

I did find this book infinitely more readable than A Game of Thrones. I think a part of it was due to the fact I watched the show before reading the first book, but put off watching the second season until I finished this book. The first season was so faithful to the book, it made it hard to drag myself through it. However, I do think that there was also an improvement in the way the book was written. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what it was, but I had a much easier time actually reading it. I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about Martin's writing style, but I do appreciate seeing it grow.

Awesome side note- I started this book on my way to start my AmeriCorps Vista service, and only later learned that George R.R. Martin had served as a Vista when he was younger. It's the little things.

June 9th 2015: Previous I had listened to the audiobook, went back and read the actual book.

July 28th, 2011: I am definitely into this series! And I caught up on the HBO series as well. Both are excellent. Of course the books are much more detailed and developed, but I did really like the show as well. I love how we hear the story from so many different characters' points of view. There are characters to love and worry about, and characters that you despise. I can't wait to get the next book! If you are a fan of epic fantasy/medieval novels definitely check out these books. Even if you've already watched the first season of Game of Thrones I think you will still enjoy the books.
