This is from 1996. Thank goodness he got better as time went by. The review by https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1889783-emily hits it.

Really didn't enjoy how Hamilton wrote the female characters. They were either manic sex kittens or there to be abused.

Uninteresting, unlikeable characters. The plot hasn't gone anywhere after 400 pages and I just can't care enough to read another 800 pages to see if it turn into something interesting.

This is well written, an interesting story, good characters, but it's so damn long, and so slow. Nothing really happens for the first 400 pages. It's incredibly descriptive, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but as much as I love reading long books, I need stuff to get going a bit quicker than that. The fact that this is only the first in a trilogy was the nail in the coffin for me. If I thought I was going to get closure, I might have carried on.

Difficult to get into because Hamilton plops you into his sci-fi world with little explanation, but I found it difficult to put down once his ideas started making sense. This us a really good book once you get into it, especially considering just how vast this space opera is. I'm looking forward to the next book in this trilogy.

It's hard for me to give Hamilton an average grade on a book. Usually they are so well-written and compelling - true page turners. But in this case, even though the writing was strong I had much trouble getting interested; in fact I had as much trouble getting interested on page 1000 as I did on page 4.

The problem is that the entire book feels like background and setup with very little attention paid to plot or even strong characterization. It reads like a colossal history book for made-up galaxy. I got tired of the lectures and when there were brief glimpses of story, they were enveloped and drowned by back story.

Maybe he's trying too hard for his opus. Perhaps an author who writes 7,000 page stories doesn't need to invest himself in an opus.

70% of the book author is toying with jargon, the rest is pumping bits of stories that are so inconsistent and painful to read.

With all that garbage you need to somehow endure and connect everything at the end of the book/series...no man....this is no way to attract any rational fan.

Hamilton fans can clap and jizz in their pants all day long but this is amateur level.

Any amateur can do this, especially a drunk one.
