I found it to be a bit too gruesome for YA. Also
the romance subplot wasn't well developed. It felt like a very lazy love traingle. Why these two teenage boys fell for this girl, and why she liked them back, I still don't know. There was no chemistry, no getting to know each other. It felt like they liked her just because she's the main character, and she liked them because they were there. It never went deeper than that. Am I overthinking it and expecting too much from teenagers and a YA novel?

If you love Criminal Minds you will absolutely love this book.

The plot was so interesting and it kept you hooked and guessing. I was in the middle of a bad reading slump as I was going through this book and the ending is what really got me out of that slump. I could not stop listening to it because I just had to know what happened. I'm usually really good at guessing plot twists but I completely missed this one. The characters are such a variety of personalities and attitudes you can't help but like them, even the resident bitchy girl Lia. I love how the book goes into depth of Cassie and Dean's profiling ability and you can tell a lot of research went into this book. I didn't really care for the love triangle and I will always root for Dean.

It's very fast paced story. The writing is straight to the point. I didn't see the twist at the end coming at all. The book held my attention that I stayed up reading into the early morning hours.

i just finished reading, and this is quite possibly the best book i’ve read this year. i’m rooting for dean, but we’ll see how the series progresses

thoughts while reading

part 1
p36: so the YOU sections are a serial killer
p44: ha! nonna is funny. michael almost definitely does as well though, and how to disappear

part 2
p90: so the YOU sections are probably cassie profiling a serial
p92: now i’m wondering if the YOU sections are about cassie’s mom’s killer
p121: truth or dare with a bunch of naturals will be intense
p129: this is quickly becoming a back and forth between dean and cass, so my current love interest prediction is him. although michael is seemingly pretty invested in all this so he’s totally interested too
p131: oh sheesh
p148: could be michael since he’s the one she wants to kill
p155: oh wow
p174: that took a turn.
a serial obsessed with cass’ mom
p196: ah merde

part 3
p199: UNSUB KNOWS
WHERE THEY LIVE
????!
p222: oh god don’t tell me unsub has
one of the girls
now
p261: not an fbi agent…!!
p262: see! i knew that
lipstick had to be a gift
p272: i wonder if we’re meant to freak out and think
the unsub is dean
p273: OH F***
p276: oh bigger f***

part 4
p284: confirmation of who’s endgame
p286: excuse me??
p290: oh
she’s lorelai’s sister
:(
p291: tough shit lorelai, you’re the oldest, you look out for her, you take her with you, end of story. (maybe i’m being slightly hard on her)

Quotes

"So take whatever time you need. Figure out how you feel.. Figure out if
Dean
makes you feel the way I do, if he'll ever let you in, and if you want him to, because the next time my lips touch yours, the next time your hands are buried in my hair—the only person you're going to be thinking about is me."

I think I would have liked this book more if I had read it before The Inheritance Games (also by Barnes). The damaged boys love interest triangle felt a bit overused having read them close together. The concept itself was interesting but the ending felt rushed and not well done. Still an enjoyable read.

Will I read another book in this series/by this author? Yes to both I think.

Maybe the fact that I’m an adult but some aspects of the book have bothered me like some expressions and words the characters have used despite being teenagers. I liked the story, it got better as the plot thickened, and I really enjoyed the parts when they were profiling and stuff. I just didn’t like the love triangle and the everyone is instantly in love with the mc theme.
I love YA books but this was annoying to me, so I can’t give more than 3.5 stars.
