VERY GORY! Had to skip many many paragraphs of this book because the author just loves body horror (which in this novel is a metaphor for transness). The world-building was impressive, and the found family storyline is fantastic, but I just found this a bit fast and gross. I really enjoyed the reflection on evangelicalism and malthusians, but it is INTENSE! I guess I would recommend for high schoolers thinking about gender who really like gross things and thrillers, or to adults willing to confront the pain of transphobia in a very visceral way

I absolutely loved this book.  This author always has such great queer horror books.  I love the representation in this book, the queer rep was especially wonderful.  There was trans people, gay, lesbian, aromantic, and even a character that uses neopronouns which is not something I read too often so I really loved it.

This had drama, horror, trans rep, and religious trauma and it was written into the plot so beautifully.  Nick was definitely my favorite character, I thought he was a great leader with the ALC.  Benji was also an amazing character, he had gotten through so much in his life and kept going.

Excellent!! Andrew Joseph White quickly became one of my favourite authors after I read this book and his second book. I HIGHLY recommend this to any queer/trans person.

The author notes that this book was written in a fit of rage, and I think that emotion really comes through in the writing. It is passionate, vivid, and vicious. This book is not for the faint of heart, the imagery is disgusting and brutal. I found Benji and Nick endearing although I think some of the dialogue was a bit too simplified. I would have loved more chapters from Nick's POV. I also wish there was a bit more
closure
at the end as well. Several reviews commented on the lack of world building but I thought the ambiguity fit well with the plot. Despite not being the target audience for this book, overall I enjoyed it nonetheless.

this book was a little slow for me to get into at the beginning but I'm so glad I kept with it! the body horror in this book is exactly what I want from body horror! it was gross and beautiful and I loved the theme too of body horror in relation to trans bodies it was perfect.
