I wanted to like this more than I did. I had a good time, mostly, while reading it, but I couldn’t stop myself from thinking “what is the point” a few times.
The rambling, train-of-thought style has its pros and cons. There are little nuggets of beauty and wisdom within the pages. But I think I would have liked it more if they were expressed with more purposeful language. I think the casual nature of the writing can be a little limiting. But it also made it an incredibly easy and very relatable read.

Jenny Slate is an adorable American treasure and we need to protect her at all costs.

“I Died: Bronze Tree” made me cry harder than any piece of writing ever has.

Could be a good MSHSL prose book, but I'm not feeling very fulfilled while reading.

There were tiny nuggets of poignancy sandwiched between filler writing about: Slate’s long lost love, wrestling with oneself, the fact that Karen is an old name, and red geraniums.
On the face it looks deep, in reality it’s just filler writing trying to sound deep.
Maybe this is just how Slate writes, but it besides what was poignant to me (and thusly, highlighted), it was tedious and boring and the “I Died” chapters were odd and pointless.
YMMV

This is a new favorite book. If you are at all a little weird, this book is spectacularly relatable. Your little weirds may not match her little weirds, but it makes you feel a little warmer inside for knowing there’s another little weirdo out there. Slate talks about her life but mostly the inside of her own mind and body, so don’t expect a tell-all Hollywood story.
