i liked it except why is ISIS in it??? ISIS isn’t in palestine??? feels like an odd racist substitute but other than that i liked the book

While I’m not a huge fan of the art style, the characters are the selling point in this for me. We get to see just a wide variety of complicated and conflicted people. The narrative is interesting and I recommend reading the author’s notes at the end as well.

Колись у дитинстві Нілі брала участь в розкопках, влаштованих її батьком, який мав неймовірну археологічну інтуїцію (=обґрунтувати власну правоту раціонально не дуже вмів) і вважав, що перебуває на правильному шляху до Ковчегу заповіту. Потім розпочалася інтифада, і розкопки довелось згорнути. Відтоді батько втратив свою університетську посаду і захворів на деменцію, і коли Нілі, тепер уже сама мати-одиначка, раптом знаходить підтвердження того, що тоді вони копали правильно, тепер довести справу до кінця - на ній. Правда, з'ясовується, що їхній розпочатий у 80-х тунель - тепер за стіною, яка відмежовує Палестинські території від Ізраїлю.

Руту Модан дуже добре вдається розповідати про ситуації, коли в одній точці простору і часу сходяться люди з зовсім різними історіями про те, як і навіщо вони туди потрапили і що це означає. Перша книжка, яку я в неї читала, теж була дуже виразно про це, а в цій вона ще й додає від себе у післямові, що це все про те, що добре би якось - якщо не узгоджувати ці конфліктні історії, то принаймні усвідомлювати їхню сконструйованість і відносність. Але, мені здається, з самих її текстів, де всі персонажі якимись перехресними шляхами рухаються зі своїми програмами, видно, який це утопійний месидж.

(Це перша її історія, яка мені на очі потрапила, де не було б образу Бабусі?)

Näh. Ei kolahtanut tämä, vaikka osa hahmoista on arkeologeja. Liiton arkkia metsästellään. Piirrostyyli ei ole ollenkaan sellainen, mistä tykkään, jollain tapaa samanlaista mitä 90-luvulla satunnaisesti aikakauslehdistä lukemissani Masa Mainio ja Jussi Juonio -sarjiksissa.

oof it is a weird time to read this book. maybe if Israel were not doing a genocide in Gaza at this very moment, I'd have been able to enjoy this more? like, it's fun, there's nothing here that I specifically found offensive (though I may just not know enough to evaluate it), but the fun-ness itself felt glib and not right, in this current moment.
