“All the Murmuring Bones” is a story about Mirin O’Malley who finds herself stuck with an arranged marriage. Unable to accept this reality, she escapes from her fate.

I found this book really difficult to get into at the start as I would say the plot begins around page 50 or later on, but when you get further into it, it is actually a very interesting story. It takes you into an adventure and every loose thread ties together at the end.

se deaI have to say, I almost DNFed this one once it was a third of the way in and nothing had seemed to happen for me. Then, one point made me stick around and the last quarter was a WILD ride. Definitely dark and sticks to the gothic genre well. Give it a longer chance than you might usually and you won't regret it. There are some good twists in there too.

I also have to say I appreciated this version of a strong female MC and women in general. They were strong, vindictive, greedy, sly, soft, smart, kind, and feminine all in one without it being forced or badly written. They were just written as real people. Then you add the witch parts, and the ghouls parts and it makes for a great tale.

This book was fascinating and helped me articulate something I wasn't able to before- I would love Gothic literature a lot more if the characters were more interesting. This book is exactly that/what the blurbs promised. It's a sweeping gothic fantasy with mer-people and other "monstrosities". Although nothing like myself, I found the main character to be well-constructed and engaging, so I was very invested in her journey. I was not able to fully guess all the secrets, which is always a plus for me, though the seeds were sown in the story. It reminded me just a little bit of What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo and Gallant by VE Schwab.

Who doesn't love dark fairy tales and mermaids? I liked that a lot of little details went unexplained; it helped the world feel more real. Some parts were a little repetitive, but ultimately the story was fun and I liked spending time with Miren! The family legends woven into the narrative were lovely, and it was refreshing to see a narrative without a clear "happy ending" determined from the beginning. (Not that the ending is unhappy, just that we don't know from page 1 what Miren's "happy ever after" should or might look like.)
