Frugality is a characteristic and is a characteristic hard to inspire within ourselves at times.

While a bit dated, the underlying take aways from this book are still useful. It changes your understanding of richness, consumption, income, wealth, and wealth building. The Millionaire Next Door is aptly named because your neighbor may very well be a millionaire with wealth in the seven figure range. Who exactly are the wealthy? Where do they come from? What are their consumption habits? Their incomes? This book aims to reveal that.

This was an interesting book that had some potentially useful advice and insight into how individuals who accumulate wealth function (although it is also dated, so that takes away from how reliable some of the information is.

Generally, I'm glad I listened to. That said, while I understand and agree with the idea of being frugal and learning how to spend and invest well, particularly where stuff is concerned (or visual markers of status), I take issue with the idea that travel is lumped into that, as I think travel is inherently more experiential and educational.

I thought this book was pretty valuable for learning the basics of how the millionaire population in the U.S. lives (specifically in the 90s, the book is a bit dated). However, I found it lacking in any sort of intersectionality and a bit repetitive. You could pick and choose the most relevant chapters to you and still understand the theme of the book. In terms of intersectionality, there was a small analysis of gender and absolutely no mention of race and how that may affect building wealth.

I thought it was a missed opportunity and one that would have made the research more compelling. Hopefully this is something they dive into in their second book?

While the statistics in this book are outdated, there are still so many great personal finance lessons in this book.

I just didn’t enjoy the book. It was a bit boring. I was expecting more from it - more of a tips based educational book. However, what is here is a portrait of the already wealthy. It was okay, but the entire book can be summarized as such: be frugal, live below your means, looks don’t mean anything. Tada! You’ve read the book.

Four stars because stats are 30 years old, but good principles. I recommend.
