Fantastic. It’s textbook-like and I mean that in a good way. It informed without boring me, and was methodical without tedium. The number of photos, diagrams, and illustrations accompanying the text offered important visual aids that gave depth to the quantity of research Beard lays out. It’s not short—I read it over the course of several weeks in fits and starts—but it is remarkable and worth the time if you have even a passing interest.

Struggling to find the necessary uninterupted reading time to actually engage with this fully. I will come back to it, I'm just clearing out my Currently reading for the New Year

it was good for the most part but it missed important details that caused the story to become somewhat incoherent and anachronistic.

This is a nearly ideal history book for me. I could not recommend this more to any layperson interested in history generally, let alone ancient Roman history in particular.

A brilliantly researched and easily digestible glimpse into the first millenia of the Roman world.
