Trick Me Twice was my first book by Becca Steele and will definitely not be my last. I can't wait to read more of her stories.

First I was sold to this book, seeing the cover for the first time, then the blurb sealed the deal. The blurb is super promising and I was really looking forward to reading it. However, I think my expectations got quite ahead of me. Therefore I was a little disappointed when the story didn't fully live up to it. But that's quite the thing with expectations, isn't it?

Trick Me Twice is a wonderful written book, that will catch your attention from the very first page. It's intriguing and a little thrilling. It takes some twist and turns that stop you from putting this book down.

What's preventing me from giving it more stars? To me, the reasons why Carter hates Raine are not strong enough or at least they haven't been explored on a deeper level, making me believe his actions towards her are "valid". Both characters are interesting but have way more potential to them than we get. I think it's just a scratch on the surface.

If you are into light bully stories, this the perfect book for you.

Trick Me Twice
An Enemies to Lovers High School Bully Romance
By: Becca Steele
Narrated by: Gregory Salinas, Stephanie Nemeth-Parker

You just cannot go wrong with a Becca Steele novel. Every one I have listened to is exciting and entertaining! Trick Me Twice is a standalone enemies to lovers story and I was captivated from the very start. Raine is just trying to get through her senior year. Life has been tough, but if she can just make it through and get off to college, life will be good. But things are never that easy. Carter is the king of the school. He lives near Raine and has to drive her, but he can't be bothered with this nobody. Until he can. Fight night changes everything, and now not only is he infatuated with Raine, but so is someone else. These two characters are incredible. Carter is a person we all knew in high school. Popular, good looking, but there is more to them. You just don't know what goes on in their lives outside of school, so assumptions can't be made. Raine is smart and beautiful, and enraptured by the thought that Carter may be interested. But just how many times can his bully like behavior be tolerated? It's push-pull, hot and steamy, mean girls and a thread of suspense all tied up into an intriguing story! I love the flash to the Four as well with a glimpse at Caiden and Winter! FUN!

Not only is it a good story, but the narrators for this book are phenomenal! Gregory Salinas comes through with a killer accent, you would swear is his native tongue. Passionate, and swoony, he makes Carter likeable. Stephanie Nemeth-Parker creates an air about Raine that is slightly nerdy, but trendy all at the same time. She gives us all the teenage feels and with Salinas, the two create off the charts chemistry. It's a great listen!

“This girl. I was gone for her. Why had I ignored how perfect she was for me?”

For someone who doesn't like bully romances as they typically borderline abuse, this one is pretty tolerable, and quite angsty and swoony at times. Though this still contains some questionable behavior from the male lead, I would say that it's not to the point that I find him irredeemable. Maybe because the female lead matches his douche behavior with her independence. I'm usually sensitive when it comes to how romances develop and have a lot of deal breakers (abuse, rape, cheating, and some illegal stuff etc.) None of these are in here if this is your first time venturing in this genre.

I actually find the back and forth between the two characters quite engaging and steamy. I loved how both of them does not solely rely on each other and have enough support system from their friends. And I liked the development they went through over the course of the book.

Even though I find most of this book unrealistic, especially since the characters are still high school students, I still find it entertaining. It's very cliche to be honest. You have the football jocks and the popular girls who throw themselves at them, and the nerdy-artsy students who were invisible. But I love how there's some subversion of tropes in here. Well, subversion is a strong word. You know how the girls are always the one who becomes jealous whenever the popular love interest have so many girls fawning over him? Here, the love interest is mostly the one who's jealous. And no, he isn't possessive to the point that he punches every guy that comes near her. But it's still fun to see him lose his mind whenever she makes him jealous. And she's also forward with the things she wants and doesn't come off as desperate.

Despite how I loved the first 80% of this book that I was willing to give it a higher rating, that last 20% is so ridiculous and cringey that I wished it should've ended when they both finally got together. But instead we
Spoilergot a kidnapping scene right after they officially started dating and the grovelling he planned didn't happen because of it. What I hate most about it is how it was written. The teaming up of the male lead's friends to save her feels so unbelievable for high school students to do. And the one who did the kidnapping of the female lead is not what I would've liked since it would give a stupid message at the end. This is supposed to be a "high school bully romance" not a crime scene/mafia shenanigans.
. The ending is sweet though, so it didn't totally ruin the book for me. But how I would've liked this so much more if that part didn't happen.

I really liked Raine and Carter. This was my first Becca Steele book, and honestly it was the cover that hooked me first! The book was hot and sexy, but I also really enjoyed the growing connection that neither one could deny. I can't wait for more in this series!
