Gripping story of a man marooned on an island in the Caribbean. Makes a life for himself, encounters natives, and devises a way off the island after a lengthy stay. One of my favorites, heavy themes of regret, thankfulness, and resourcefulness. I particularly liked the prose in this book, it felt easy to read and I never got bored with the storyline. Unsurprisingly an enduring tale, would read again, maybe next time I'm on a beach.

I found the events of the book boring, and I couldn't bring myself to care about the main character.

Novels like this are the main reason why we hate typical white Englishmen of that time! I wish I could strip it from that single star but unfortunately, I can't...

A wonderful tale of survival and the resilience of the human spirit, all packaged in a dramatic adventure form. The passages regarding Friday and the Carib natives will make modern readers uncomfortable (references to "savage creatures" and a general tone of white moral superiority), as may some of the overtly Christian reflections. However the book is a product of its time and has much more to offer. Most of all, it was just good entertainment with enough action to maintain interest.
