Amazing setting and characters, but the story seemed like it ended abruptly. There's so much potential to explore this world but the overall story just scratched the surface. I would love to see this story expanded into a more elaborate saga!

This trade collects issues 1 to 5 of Golden Rage. The story follows a group of older women sent to an island after society deems them useless. The women divided themselves into groups with slightly different beliefs and motivations. The comic is advertised as a mix of Battle Royale and The Golden Girls, but I don’t know if I would completely agree.

There are cute, witty, and lovable moments like The Golden Girls, but something was missing for me. I had many questions and didn’t fully connect with any of the characters. The biggest one was why these women were sent away. Some had family, while others didn’t. So is it similar to a nursing home situation, where there aren’t resources to care for them or is it a mandate? I wish I had more information to help me fully understand these women's situation. The Battle Royale aspect was brief but there. Once again, not knowing the whys behind actions made it hard to decide if I liked this piece of the story.

I loved the art and enjoyed the characters Lottie, Rosie and Regina, but the rest felt very one-dimensional. I enjoyed how the story discussed female fertility and its relation to worth as a society, and it was done beautifully. So many of us have to face it and make decisions around it. It is a vulnerable topic and was presented so well in this comic.

I did a quick Google search and haven’t seen any updates on whether this story continues. It leaves a bit of a cliffhanger, and I want to see what happens next. I hope to find the answers I am craving.

Thank you for being a friend...

After reaching menopause, women are sent away to an island where other women have created small civilizations, farms, and even their own wars. But when our main character is thrust onto this island after becoming menopausal in her thirties, she comes to know first-hand just how intense the island can be. From the violent red hats, the witch, and a group of silent women who bury the dead, it's clear that there's a place for every woman. Unfortunately, the outside world no longer thinks they deserve to exist. Will they be able to escape?

Every comic switches perspective and offers Golden Girls quotes between each issue. This makes for an interesting perspective of how each woman got to this point in her life--thankless daughters, loss of a wife, and just plain menopause. While some folks think that there isn't a lot of heft in this idea, I say, who the heck cares? It's a fun premise and an interesting plot. It's a miniseries, too. I'm of the camp that sometimes we can just be along for the ride. Not everything needs to have a high-fantasy level plot and characterization. And hell, this book is a lot of fun. This pairs well with [b:Killers of a Certain Age|60149532|Killers of a Certain Age|Deanna Raybourn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1649796916l/60149532._SY75_.jpg|94212626].

It was very disjointed and I felt disconnected from the characters.

I loved the art in this volume! The jewel tones mixed with pastels really worked for me. In the inner-monologue of the "main" character for each volume was also color coded which was helpful. The concept for this was cool - challenging ageism through kick ass grandmas on an island of castoffs (anyone who has gone through menopause, so not all grandmas). The confrontation with Red and how that wrapped up fell flat for me, it felt unbelievable even within this dystopian universe. How the conclusion was settled also fell flat for me. Both of those pieces really jolted me out of the story, which otherwise was fantastic. I also really liked that they collected the backmatter for the individual issues in this volume. That is the part of comics I miss the most when I read a trade as opposed to by issue. The concept and art - 5 stars. But those two bits... I just can't go higher than 3 stars.
