It wasn't a bad book. The themes are important. I just didn't enjoy the tone, pacing or style.

I think it held its own rather well. We had great discussions about what identity means to each of us, and our perspective of the two daughters as well as the parents and other adults in their lives. At times, it was slow, and we all found ourselves not reading as often. Then later, we would all be anxiously waiting for us to know what happens next.

Who should read this? Someone who is open to hearing other, difficult perspectives, and really take it to heart. What does it mean to be white? Black? How would you identify yourself to others? What words would you choose to explain...you?

Stunning. The language is so real. I can remember my parents and their friends talking and going on like that. A truly compelling story. Great book.

Someone somewhere said that this author was underrated and they were right. This book was so good it hurt. Being biracial myself I idebtified with a lot, but also ached for the protagonist and her forced separation from her community. So, so good.

interesting premise-young mixed race girl of radical Irish and Black parents grapples with her relationship to her family and identity, but lacks strong emotional core and feels a bit dated now :/
