Από τα βιβλία που έχουν την ικανότητα να σε μεταφέρουν σε μια ζοφερή πραγματικότητα, με κεντρικό χαρακτήρα έναν άντρα, που παρόλο που παρουσιάζεται σαν τέρας και οι δράσεις του είναι πέρα για πέρα αποτρόπαιες, φανερώνονται όλα με μια μεσαιωνική απλότητα, λες και καμία πράξη του δεν είναι λάθος, παράνομη, ειδεχθής.
Ο Γκρενούιγ δεν είναι ένας χαρακτήρας συμπαθής. Νομίζω πως δε θα ήθελε και ο ίδιος να είναι συμπαθής σε κανέναν. Ούτε αντιπαθής είναι όμως. Ξέρω, ξέρω, ξέρω... Οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι με τους οποίους συναναστράφηκε σε προσωπικό επίπεδο πέθαναν, σκότωσε περίπου 25 γυναίκες, προκάλεσε με το άρωμά του ένα ανεξέλεγκτο όργιο, ηθελημένα έπεσε θύμα κανιβαλισμού.
Δεν τον αντιπάθησα, δε τον συμπάθησα, δε τον σιχάθηκα, απλώς τον δέχτηκα. Και στην τελική, νομίζω ότι απλώς αυτό έψαχνε. Γιατί πραγματικά νόμιζε ότι ήθελε να τον θαυμάζουν και να τον προσκυνούν, να τον φοβούνται και να τον αγαπούν, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα, απλώς ήθελε να τον αποδεχτούν.
Ο Γκρενούιγ, που δεν είχε προσωπική μυρωδιά και μπορούσε να εφεύρει κάθε λογής άρωμα, μόνο με τη σκέψη, που δεν τον ενδιέφεραν οι ανθρώπινοι νόμοι και κάθε άλλο παρά εκτίμηση ένιωθε για την ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη, αυτός ο άντρας είναι ένα τέρας. Από εκείνα τα τέρατα που έχουν σκοπό, αλλά καμία ευθύνη για αυτό που έγιναν, που γεννήθηκαν σε μια ψαραγορά στη Γαλλία κάτω από τη μυρωδιά της ψαρίλας.

El Perfume nos abre un mundo nuevo que creíamos conocer muy bien pero descubrimos que en realidad no lo hacíamos ni remotamente: el mundo de los olores. Desde los hedores más repulsivos y nauseabundos hasta los aromas más agradables y deliciosos nos acompañan a través de las páginas de Patrick Süskind, tejiendo una realidad en la que es el olfato quien gobierna por encima del resto de los sentidos: la realidad de Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, un joven parisino con un sentido del olfato muy desarrollado que carece de olor propio. Grenouille tiene una única meta en la vida: fabricar el perfume más poderoso de todos los tiempos, capaz de dominar la voluntad de cualquier persona que lo huela.
Una verdadera experiencia olfativa con uno de los finales más impactantes que he leído en mucho tiempo que, sin embargo, no ha sido capaz de mantener mi antención durante todo el trascurso de la historia.

DNF 53% I just couldn't continue. The beginning was interesting and then it just became so boring that it put me to sleep every time I tried to read it.

A beloved student...who I never taught gave this book to me a couple of years ago....and I left it on a shelf while I traveled so I would not leave it behind. Now that I am finally in the States, I finally picked it up and delved into it. Before starting to read the book, I thought this book was a murder mystery....about a serial killer who was in search of a perfect smell.
But....this book was not so much a mystery....more the story of a tale of woe. How a boy who was unloved and born to a street prostitute--- grows up and searches for the greatest scent. He does not have an odor, so he is in search of the perfect perfume. I enjoyed the character study, but I also felt disgusted--- not only for the way the character acts, but also because some of the descriptions of different perfumes ended up causing me to cringe from the idea of the heavy perfumes....you might say the descriptions were persuasive.
I have to say, don't kill me, I was disappointed by the book....I wanted more thrill, more adventure...the book was well written and I enjoyed parts, but in the end it is not something I would read again.
Read if you enjoy books that take place in late 18th century France....or books about the senses.
