Obsidian Prey

After the CEO of Amber, Inc. betrayed her trust and stole her claim to a cave containing rare amethyst ruins, Lyra Dore swore she would never believe him again. But Cruz Sweetwater needs her help and Lyra, once again, finds herself helpless to resist . . .

Unfortunately, Lyra and Cruz's second chances romance is rather lackluster. To begin with, Cruz's behavior was unacceptable and while he regrets his actions, it is clear that he would do it all again in a heartbeat. Moreover, Lyra is far too accepting of his excuses and goes from hating him to loving him much too quickly. Finally, the fated mates idea is underdeveloped and there really isn't much chemistry between them.

The suspense plot is too convoluted with the connection between the various events - thefts, attacks and hallucinations - remaining vague and amorphous until the very end. The identities of the villains are also obvious from the start and the big reveal scene is anti-climactic.

Overall, not one of the better books in the series.

I always enjoy these. She has a good world put together and the characters are always likeable. The plots aren't deep but they are entertaining and keep me interested.

I was a big fan of Jayne Castle books about ten years ago, so I was quite excited when I picked this up. In fact, I could hardly wait to read it. So maybe this is a case of unrealistic expectations - because I kind of hated this.

Frankly, it was boring. Seriously - fall asleep reading it kind of boring. Since I've read this I have come across books that were more boring ... so at least I finished this. It had a complete plot that was somewhat fluid - just .... boring.

The characters were just .... meh. The most exciting character was Lyra's pet dust bunny. Not even kidding. That dude was hilarious. Lyra and Cruz .... too predictable maybe? I don't know - they just didn't do it for me.

I guess in conclusion I didn't like this book. What can I say? It was a novel! It had characters! There was a plot!

Second-chance romance between a plucky FMC and the guy who snatched a huge archeological find from under her nose, when they're thrown together to investigate a mystery. They're the usual, very likeable JAK leads - she's plucky and spirited, while he's a broody alpha who falls first.

Hilarious banter and their romance has the soul mate element, which I loved, but she definitely makes it difficult for him to pursue her and regain her trust (although he does need to grovel *more*). Their chemistry and dynamics are delightfully, and the mystery/adventuring ties in nicely. The beret-wearing Picasso-esque dust bunny is the cutest!

Lyra Dore was dead broke after trying to sue Amber Inc. after they confiscated her amethyst amber ruin find, struggling to recover after she discovered the man she loved had betrayed her, and terrified that her waking nightmares could mean she was going insane. Then Cruz Sweetwater comes storming back into her life, but why?

We're back on Harmony again, meeting new people, discovering new talents, and watching a couple come back together again. I love these futuristic books written under Jayne Ann Krentz's Jayne Castle pseudonym. She is slowly weaving her two series together (Harmony and Arcane Society) in a fashion that adds layers of enjoyment for those of us following both.

Romance with a smidgen of science fiction and a dollop of mystery appeals to me and that is what Krentz delivers every time. She's strongest at characterization, especially in regards to the life form known as dust bunnies. If you want a little more rez to your enjoyment of the books, check out YouTube where there are very interesting and funny video ads for most of the books.
