The only reason I didn't give this a 5 out of 5 was the ick factor with spiders and cockroaches and rats. :P. But it was an excellent book to read! I had fun. Time for the second book now.

Fantastic book for any fans of Narnia, Percy Jackson, and/or Harry Potter. I really have nothing bad to say about this book (series).
This first book perfectly balances the need for Gregor to get home to his family and his desire to do the right thing.
Gregor is one of the most believable characters and has such raw and relatable emotions.
The adventure is thrilling, taking us through the dark but exciting and fantastic realm of the Underland.
I would recommend this series to anyone!

We can tell that it's a 1st book, it's filled with generic clichés and a very fast pacing. One thing that threw me off right at the start was how weirdly mature Gregor is for an 11 years old that just got dumped into a whole new world with his 2nd years old sister, he doesn't freak out or anything at the sight of humongous cockroaches or anything. The prophecy trope kinda wasted the potential of the story since we basically knew the lines of the story since the beginning, the last twist was well-handled though. Ripred was pretty fun and interesting, he was a nice addition to the cast that would've been really plain if he wasn't there. Overall a barely above average book that had an interesting world and was very easy to read while still having decent prose (to my eyes though, I'm not a pro). I still have my hopes for the rest of the series, I know they won't disappoint

1) Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

2) Genre: Young Adult

3) Synopsis: Gregor falls through a vent in his basement and travels to a new world. A world with bats, rats, cockroaches, and spiders at war. Gregor needs to find allies to help him on his journey.

4) Feelings: I read this book for two reasons. One because my wife said she really liked this book. Two because it was written by Suzanne Collins. You know the Suzanne Collins that wrote "Hunger Games". First let me say I can see this is a good book but it had too many of my pet peeves to give it a rating better than 3 stars. This book had talking animals. I am not sure why this annoys me but it really does. This book also uses weird rhythms and spelling to show another language or accent. Hate that. I really do. So when animals were talking in weird spelling (I am a horrible speller by the way) or people were talking like Yoda. Annoying it is. Crazy it me drives.

5) Final recommendation: If your pet peeves are the same as mine I don't recommend this book. The book was still entertaining I just couldn't get past those two things. Sorry Suzanne. I loved Hunger Games though.

What a WONDERFUL (and intense!) ride this book brought me on!! It made me feel every emotion and I loved every bit of it; perhaps, as a mother and a wife, even more so because I found myself incapable of not putting myself in the mother's shoes.
SpoilerI especially loved what an incredible big brother and caretaker Gregor is to little Boots - and the BABYWEARING!! Oh that made my Momma heart sing!! And let me just say, I never in my wildest dreams would have thought I would find myself sobbing over the death of a roach!! 🤣🤣
500 stars!! I can't wait to read the next one!

If I'd been the right age for this book, four stars easy. As it is, it was fun? But not that original, and not that deep. I liked the cockroaches best of all. I disliked spider deaths.

I liked this a lot! I am using this as a book club book for my students so I wanted to read it first to see if it would work and I think it’ll be perfect!! I have a few readers who would just love this.
