The movie, in writing - or almost... A great novelization of the great movie.

You all know the story, so no need to repeat it here. Meet Marty, George, Lorraine, Doc Brown and Biff Tannen...

It's been years since I read this. The first time was just after the movie (and the book!) came out and I've read it a couple of times since. This was my favourite movie and reading the novelisation was like a "spot the differences" picture, although the book pointed out a couple of things I'd missed seeing at the cinema.

As a huge fan of the films and an avid reader, this book was a must read for me. This book adds some scenes that were not in the movie - such as perspectives from minor characters and scenes that expand upon Marty's character. I enjoyed a lot of these added bits, although some changes might catch fans off guard. One that I didn't like as much was Doc being present during the cafeteria fight between Biff and Marty, but this is more an opinion than anything.

The writing...leaves something to be desired. It's a bit too straightforward and stiff at times, and there aren't a lot of descriptors in the text. I ended up picturing the characters in the movie saying the dialogue a lot. You can also definitely tell that this book was written in 1985 - it contains some words that are just outdated at this point.

Fitting that one of the best films ever made gets one of the best Novelizations I've ever read, managing to capture all the magic, tension and humour of its cinematic counterpart. A seriously good read.

This reads as though it was written from the screenplay, not the movie, as some of the scenes (most notably the first) don't quite match up. In the book, a detention bound Marty uses a MacGyverish maneuver to get out of detention and to his band audition. In the movie he goes to the doc's house and blows out his speakers with his amplifier. I think, when books are adapted into movies, the book is almost always better. Not so sure about vice versa. It's hard to top the visuals of the Delorean, the lightning, and the trails of flame. I did learn some new things--for instance, the reason George overslept after his midnight visit from "Darth Vader" was that Marty actually chloroformed him--something that must have been cut from the movie itself. Why, yes, I DID watch the movie right after reading the book.

Okay, but between being based on an earlier revision of the screenplay and rather pedestrian writing, not a great adaptation. Worth the dollar I paid at Goodwill, but not much more.

This was a pleasant surprise. I'm a huge Back to the Future fan, so it was fun to see some additional scenes and have a few things fleshed out more. As is often the case, it seems this was based on a earlier version of the script so there were some differences. Overall, very enjoyable.
