A solid 4 stars for the whole book, plus 0.25 stars for the last ~100 pages that got me real excited about it again.

The detail in these books is a double-edged sword, it is both glorious and also makes reading them a little bit of a slog sometimes. (Which is why it took me over a month to read this one, plus the minor detail of too many work hours and a holiday season…)

Am I happy I pushed through and read the whole series (so far)? 100% yes. Am I glad to be moving onto something different for a bit? Also a resounding yes.

And still … Jamie + Claire 4eva ❤️

Barely anything happens. It ends on a cliffhanger. As per usual, a lot of set up for the next book. There isn’t a lot of character development. It’s just….meditations on daily life in the late 1700s, which is interesting but for 900 pages I need a more developed plot rather than a whole bunch of barely related storylines- some of which I don’t know at all why they even exist. I have been reading pretty much only this series since August, books 2-9 and I am so very relieved that I’m done.

This book could have been a peaceful end- cover a longer period of time with less unnecessary fluff, end with peace in the colonies and peace on Fraser’s Ridge after the war. No need to drag it out until the character’s dying days. Jamie and Claire are old. We all know they’re old. They’re going to die. Why do we need a tenth book to get to that point?

It seems like she’s setting it up for another spin off series about William.

This book took me a long time to get through. It has a plodding pace as far as action is concerned. This book is more character-driven - best for people who are already invested in the characters. And, in case you are wondering, the story ending sets up a sequel.

I really wish Goodreads could do half stars, for me this was a 4.5 star book.
No, this isn't a sweeping, comprehensive story. But the Outlander books haven't really been that for the last 6 books, and I personally like that.
Gabaldon still has a strong sense of who her characters are, and I enjoy getting to spend time with them. There are still moments that make me chuckle, that make me misty eyed, and that get me in the heart, which is what I think the book sets out to do.
Light spoiler and then spoiler explained:
SpoilerI was glad to have one thing spoiled for me (by my choice) before starting the book, and I think it made me enjoy it more than others.
ACTUAL
major SPOILER:
SpoilerThe title, the hype, and stuff in the book seems to hint that Jamie or Claire (really Jamie) could die in the book, especially in a battle at the end. He survives, the book covers the battle, Jamie almost dies but he doesn't. not being stressed about this honestly made the book more enjoyable.

yes, I'd like it if DG had a concept of a character beat other than 'stubborn', but I really felt for all the character moments and stories.
