I was completely caught up in this book until the second act, which came later than anticipated, when The Problem arose. At that point, it changed from being a loping, casual story of one young man and turned into a TV movie. I think that the direction was misguided and that there were other ways to tell the story that maintained the initial pace but also included a problem and resolution that were not so different in tone from the rest of the book.

Slow at a few points but a fascinating look at the AIDS epidemic and the reality of the toll it had on the gay community. Love this perspective.

I use a lot of adjectives when I write these review notes that I worry may seem hyperbolic, but this truly was stunning. Newson's sheer mastery of prose and narrative to hold a novel of such scope and such specific humanity, while articulating the pain, anger, outrage, and infinitudes of hope necessary for carrying on acting through such systemic extinction attempts is extraordinary. I don't think I'll be able to stop thinking about this book for quite some time.
