I read this to make sure it wouldn't be too scary for my tween daughter and decided it would be okay.

Based on the real-life experiences of the author, Judith Kerr, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit tells the story of Anna, a German Jewish girl from an assimilated family who is forced to flee from the Nazis first to Switzerland, then France, then England.

Highly recommended for capturing the many conflicting feelings of the young refugees as they deal with their surroundings and strive to feel at home somewhere.

Semi-autobiographical, yet on a classic scale, ever so slightly inadequate, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is fervently enjoyable, well-written and surprisingly optimistic despite its desperate and depressing subject matter. The first few chapters are "meh.", but the descriptions of refugee life in later chapters prove to be something more thought-provoking.
