Was super excited to read a new cute book - but mostly is about that - a cute reading but nothing revolutionary. Some quotes:
- The attraction of illness lies in its capacity to redeem one of the greatest vices of our society: not doing anything,” writes management professors Carl Cederström and André Spicer in The Wellness Syndrome.
- Ben Coates puts it well: “Yeah. You have to fit in. To be gay is completely fine and a man married to another man, that’s fine. But if you put your trash out in the wrong container or on a wrong day, that is a major social scandal.”
- Jenny Odell, author of How to Do Nothing, calls this NOMO, or necessity of missing out.
- We’d all be fixed if there was just one way and we could figure it out. People just want one answer. They want you to tell them to go into nature for 120 minutes a week and breathe deeply eight times, and that’s it. People feel it’s simpler if they are given a very clear blueprint, whereas in real life there is much more room to wiggle.”

Doing nothing or “niks” to improve your emotional, physical and mental health? Probably the only self improvement bandwagon I’ll be jumping on.

I enjoyed the book and I felt like it had a lot of good points. I rate it 3 stars because it felt a little too generalized for describing the concept and I don't like the pidgeon-holing of dutch people.

I'd rather go out and stare in space and read this book, which I guess is what this author wanted to accomplish. I couldn't finish. Such a boring book. I don't care about how the author came to the Netherlands.

Another one of those “I know the general idea of thesis but it’s nice to have a reminder”. Based in science as well. I have a different edition (the one with the fat cat on the cover which is honestly the only reason I picked it up) where the pages are a bit hard to turn. Didn’t think there needed to be as many pictures and the writing could have gone into more depth. But I got it on sale and it’ll make a good coffee table book.
