I remembered when I first picked up this book. It was when I was in high school and with all the stress of everything I needed a book that was happy. This book doesn't really have a happy ending, but I'm not going to give it away. Since though in a sense the ending gives hope to the kingdom of Galnicia even though Malva loses someone she loves.

Despite the sad ending this story deserved my five star rating because the writing style is beautiful, it makes you want to finish the book. The characters too seem both real and distant to the reader. As though the reader can relate to them, which is something all good heros/heroines need.
The way it is written is definitely unlike most of the novels you see these days. Anne-Laure Bondoux writes a beautiful, fast-paced at times, and slow at others to match what is going, story of a Princess and her struggle against her wants and desires, and her duty to her kingdom.

so this book started out awesome, but that was about it. the back said that there would be pirates. Pirates were only mentioned! The middle was kinda boring. it seemed like it should have been more exciting and it had the potential to be exciting, but it wasn't. And the ending was disappointing. sure if you want to read this, go ahead, but don't make the mistake i made and buy it!

*Real rating: somewhere between 3-4.25 stars, but I'll keep it at 5 for nostalgic reasons.*

This is my third time reading this book, the last time being probably before I joined Goodreads. I remembered some details, a couple of characters and the fact that I cried my eyes out. But upon rereading the book, I realized I had forgotten some things, which kind of made it feel as if I was reading it for the first time again.

This is a book about adventure, despite what the title might have you believe. Sure, there's some romance involved, but overall it is about a couple of people being thrown into certain adventurous situations one after another. There is some amazing character development going on throughout the book, especially with the female main lead Malva. The worldbuilding is rich of descriptions, though perhaps not thoroughly explained; the characters are diverse in terms of age and personality, though some are more lovable than others, and the themes of friendship and self-discovery are great! The second half of the book is definately my favourite, but without the first half I wouldn't have been able to reach the second half and to appreciate the character development. I didn't cry this time around, but I was still left with some weird feeling in my chest after having finished the book.

While I probably wouldn't have put "The Princess and the Captain" as one of my absolute favourite books today, I can understand why my younger self did. Being the rather nostalgic person I am, I'll let it stay on the favourite-books shelf for now.

I really liked this book, but it was somewhat confusing, so may read it again someday.

I was very excited about this book because the cover is beautiful, but the writing was pedantic and occasionally nonsensical--like the type of nonsensical you get when you're reading something by a person whose first language isn't English. And, strangely enough, the book was actually written in French; so clearly the translator is at least partially to blame for this problem. But there's also a lot of head-hopping between the Princetta and a male character named Orpheus, which made it very difficult to get into the book and connect with the characters.

I really wouldn't recommend this one. Maybe it's better in the original French.
