Wow. This book is going to stay with me for a long time.

I was just as befuddled as the protagonist except on one point-
I knew it was the other carving the whole time.

In retrospect, other things would probably be obvious as well, but I enjoyed going along on this horrible journey with them.

Those poor children.

The book starts with a lot of funny or zany bits. Lulling you into thinking everything is going to be great and why is this tagged as horror? The middle is fantastically terrifying and makes you wonder if “everyone dies the end” is next. The end has you feeling relieved. Not optimistic and happy but whew. I like suspenseful horror like this. Kingfisher ties together a little Poe, some Lovecraft, and some good dry humor that would make Douglas Adams proud.

This was honestly such a great read. I wouldn't say it's prefect, but the intrigue makes up for the any imperfections. I started it late at night when I'd just finished another book planning to just read the first couple of chapters and ended up reading the first 100 pages. I finished it in less than 36 hours. There is just something about the main characters I loved and the tension was spot on for me. It wasn't particularly terrifying (for me at least, but I consume a good amount of horror), but got pretty eerie in some places.
