Another fantastic mystery in the Lady of Letters series! I thoroughly enjoyed following Countess Amelia Amesbury on another adventure as she manages her secret advice column along with her budding romance with Simon Bainbridge, the handsome marquis, all while trying to solve a murder. This time Amelia tries to help Simon prevent his sister from eloping with an unsuitable gentleman to Gretna Green, but before anything happens, her suitor winds up dead. As she & Simon work together to solve the mystery, Amelia must rely on all her sleuthing skills to find the murderer before it’s too late.

Amelia & Simon make such a swoon worthy team. Their growing romance was filled with so many close proximity, near kisses that had me audibly scolding anyone who interrupted them. I loved their sizzling chemistry & the romantic tension between them. I also enjoyed the delightful humor sprinkled throughout. Amelia’s escape from a balcony involving a tree & Simon had me laughing out loud. Each chapter begins with a clever anecdote from Amelia’s column that fits in nicely with what’s happening in the proceeding chapter.

One of the other enjoyable aspects of this series are the endearing relationships between Amelia & her deceased husband’s aunt & ward, her friends, & Simon & his sister. Along with the murder mystery, Amelia tries to help her friend Kitty convince her husband’s family to allow them to stay in London. Kitty is Amelia’s best friend & she can’t imagine life without her fashionable sidekick. I loved seeing Amelia’s & Kitty’s competitive streak as they play croquet & engage in friendly competitions.

The mystery itself had several twists & turns as Amelia & Simon investigate each suspect. There are even moments where their suspicions hit a little too close to home. As the story reaches its exciting conclusion, I was on the edge of my seat.

This delightful mystery series is a must read for historical romance/mystery fans. Looking forward to more books in the series. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided. 4.5-5 stars!

The writing is a little cheesy and fluffy but these are so cute and fun that I'mma eat 'em up every time

Took a bit for me to get into the book, but a solid sequel.

It had pretty slow bits, but the second half of the book really picked up

If I didn't have to work I would have stayed home and read this book in one day! I couldn't put it down.

Lady Amelia Amesbury is very much a modern and forward thinking woman and worthy sleuther and Lord Simon Banbridge is the perfect sleuthing partner and a rare man for that time in that he sees her as his equal.

When Simon's sister is being wooed by the social climbing George Davies who was once in the Bainbridge's employment Simon is determined to stop this courtship at any time and has enlisted Amelia as Lady Agony to try and dissuade his sister from eloping with the scoundrel. When George Davies is found murdered outside the opera house Simon's sister, Marielle, is inconsolable and very upset with her brother who she holds responsible.

Amelia is determined to along with Simon to find out who killed George Davies and help repair the relationship between brother and sister but could the suspect be their father the Duke of Bainbridge?! Plus will Amelia's dearest friend and partner in crime Kitty Hampstead be moving to the wilds of England?!

This was such a great mystery with plenty of red herrings that had me chasing down the wrong trail. I love the growing relationship with Amelia and Simon and getting to know all the side characters better and better.

A nice followup. This time, Simon's sister is enamored of a scoundrel who is promptly killed. There's also a side plot with her friend Kitty being forced by in-laws to move to the mansion in the country. Another enjoyable read.

These are fun and the perfect diversion for me when I need something lighthearted and engaging. I listened to both the 1st and 2nd books one after the other, and the audiobook narration is fantastic.

So many elements that I love in a book:
Cozy mystery
Victorian England
Clever, outspoken heroine
Hint of romance
Plot twists
Humor and wit
Literary allusions
Well rounded characters

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series publishing in December. Amelia Amesbury, or "Lady Agony" is my favorite type of female protagonist. She's bold, intelligent, a little awkward and totally lovable.

The ending was the peak of the whole book to be honest.

As other reviews have mentioned, I also find that the first book was more interesting in a way, but in both cases I find that 1. The protagonist it's just way to modern and it takes me out of the story, it's okay to want your female characters in period stories to be more critical of their time and the world they live in but at times it feels out of place, also her lack of 'fashion interest' and her duties made her look what we now we call a pick me....

2. The lack of clues or any progress in the case up until the very end when all of the sudden they know who it's the culprit, idk I just find it annoying.

These are fun! I barely remember the first one, but you almost don’t need to for these. They are nice light read.
