A friend recommended this book to me because I had worked in the international development field and had some knowledge of some of the countries Gersony worked in.  I found his story fascinating and his courage perseverance and raw honesty compelling.  His influence on humanitarian assistance in war-torn and disaster zones is unequaled. This book captures all this and more.

Such a good read.
As someone who lived in some of these places at the time and whose family worked in the international community this was like hearing about family members.
As someone who teaches world history this covers a lot of ground in little time.
It is sad that the US has left a lot of the humanitarian work that it used to do to other countries and private organizations.
Folks decrying the immigration crisis, look for the root causes in this book.

Extremely informative read about international aid and gathering data at the source. Caveats: follows the experiences of one person and a somewhat diplomatic/bureaucratic read (lots of names)

This is a book by an excellent writer about a remarkable man with a big heart for understanding the people stuck in terrible situations such as natural disasters and military and political conflicts. Fascinating book. I'll count this biography as one of my favorites for a long time.
