For me, [b:Second Sight|155659|Second Sight (Arcane Society, #1)|Amanda Quick|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1440701776s/155659.jpg|3363163] was just ok. Amanda Quick's writing was decent enough to keep me reading. I can understand why some people would like it, and others not.

I'm just not into a book that talks about proper behavior, vapors, and delicate fluffy things. To be fair, historical romance is not my forte. I'm hoping the author's modern version of this series would interest me more.

What fun!
This book is in a similar vein to Pullman's Sally Lockhart series - only for grown-ups. The erotic scenes are well-written and judiciously employed.

I enjoy photography exhibitions with examples from the Victorian era (eg. Charles Dodgeson, Julia M. Cameron). So I really enjoyed the details included by the author on the whole budding art of photography during that time. The art, the scams, the developing processes - all fascinating, pioneering stuff.

I look forward to reading more by this author.

I didn't think I'd like this book based on the synopsis and the fact that I lost interest while reading it. But I decided to read the book anyway because there were books later in the series that I did want to read and I'm obsessive about reading books in order. I was amazed that I was hooked by the end of the 1st chapter and did not want to put it down. Unfortunately the book takes a nosedive and does have a significant block of boredom where we see a lot of Venetia's day to day life and how her and Gabriel's search for the 'villain' progresses. Parts of this book made me feel like I was in an episode of Scooby-Doo though and I waited for the infamous line..."And I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for you meddling kids"....it didn't come though. Not to fear....the book does pick up and ends very nicely with everything tied up in a nice neat bow.

I have no explanation for this. I don't know why I read books like this one. Probably for the sex scenes.

A lot to like, but also predictable and often eye roll worthy. It was poorly executed, however I liked the characters and the humor throughout the book. Not enough explanation about the paranormal aspects, but it eventually worked out in the end. Fun, read it in a single sitting. 3.5 ⭐ rounded up.

I really enojy this book even at time the main female character got on my nerves a bit. especially the part when he went to a friend home and refuse to go to the country to help out the situation in the book. other than that, it was a great read.
