Reading The View from Castle Rock was a joy. I loed it from start to finish, I was swept away by the story. What beautiful writing, I'm so glad that Munro won the Nobel.

I only read the one title short story, but really enjoyed it. Thanks to Chrissie for posting the link.

This a true slice of life. We see a family's voyage, by ship, from Scotland to Nova Scotia. There are the different classes of passengers and even the different type of person in the family.

One of my favorite things about shorts is that the author can give you a glimpse, almost a Polaroid, of an event or time of life without the baggage of explaining everything. Justifying. Building a foundation and then building it up. This was a beautiful example of that.

This is Munro giving us a handshake and a tour into her house and her pots and pans and all the mundane details that make a person a person.

Munro wrote a memoir as memoirs should be written, "the past approached from a distance", the memories colored by the gradual understanding of the passing years, and perhaps never fully real. It was the portrait of her person, maybe some sort of therapy, perhaps even a final look at life, the sort people often do when they have the luxury of time before they go gentle into the good night.

This was my first Munro and I know I will only be glancing at pieces of herself from here.

There is no solid story here if that's what you're looking for. But if you must go on, you'll find Munro, the person, and you'll like it if you're interested in people, not just names.

Very slow start...but once I got into the middle of the book I enjoyed it.

My first official Alice Munro short story collection, and I honestly wish I didn't start with this one! It ended up being more of a memoir about her father's families history and journey of immigrating to Canada from the 1800s. There were parts of every story that intrigued me, kept me reading and even had me laughing but for the majority of the book I was just a bit bored. Alice Munro's writing however is exquisite no doubt, and I'm looking forward to reading more of her fiction work. The Ticket was by far my favourite short story!
