oof this was a HEAVY book. massive TW for graphic depictions and discussion of rape and sexual assault. that being said this book did a good job at analyzing the complexities of the flawed way that rape and the "he said she said" situation is handled within a court of law. there were some thriller elements, but overall this leans more towards mystery and/or legal drama. idk this was a good book but it was just such heavy subject matter that i feel like i need to stare at a wall for a while

I am finding that I love podcast style books. I find this amusing since I have never listened to an actually podcast before.

I tend to rate on the high end always, but I finished this book in two days - and would have sooner if I didn’t have responsibilities. The characters were all very believable and vivid, and I was captivated and surprised multiple times throughout - as well as enraged for the characters who were wronged. Definitely look up the trigger warnings before reading.

This isn’t a spoiler, I promise, but I know men who feel their lives were ruined even having been let off many, many hooks. Ugh. So frustrating, but so real what women go through.

The only “spoiler” I have to offer is thank GOODNESS that bird was rescued. Would have removed a star if not - for real.

Wow! This Thriller/Suspense/Mystery packs quite a punch that makes you think about the injustices involving rape and sexual assault trials!

I’m not for books about court trials, but this is different, it’s not really a legal thriller. This is about a true-crime podcaster that is following a rape trial. She interviews many of the people involved and follows the trial, bringing it to her podcast and putting her listeners in the juror’s box. She’s well known as the last hope for people seeking justice. So when she comes to this coastal town, she is sought out by a girl who is looking for justice for her sister who was gang raped and murdered.

This is an emotional story. It touches home for many who have been sexually assaulted in their lives, but did or didn’t know that’s what it was. I will admit to being someone who didn’t know, until years later while talking with a therapist. These things are being brought to light more and more.

Goldin did a wonderful job writing this book. She makes you think, feel and empathize with what someone goes through. Some might find this triggering, I’m not sure, but I thought that the way it was written makes people open their eyes to what many have gone through. What these girls suffered was truly heartbreaking!!

This book will stay with me.
Bold. Daring. Real. Integrity. Dignity.
A young girl is sexually assaulted on her way home from a party. A true crime podcast personality visits the town to cover the trail months later.
As she investigates, a 25 year old death is brought to her attention. Hannah is still seeking justice for her sister's death.
This book does an amazing job exploring the complexity of rape. Victim blaming. Archaic definition of rape- must involve some sort of weapon. Ongoing violation of not just the rape- the rape kit, reliving the trauma via filing report, trial, media, gossip.
