Revolutionary for its time.

One of my favorite slave narratives - though I really don't like to refer to this genre that way. One of the only slave narratives we have from a woman, it definitely gives a different perspective from other slave narratives such as the narratives of Frederick Douglass & O. Equiano. Give it a read if you have the time...there's much to be learned. What's even better is that the story is online, too!

Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the LIfe of a Slave Girl is a brilliant autobiography. Jacobs recounts the life of an enslaved woman, one that until this time had been largely ignored. Jacobs does a brilliant job of discussing the negative effects of enslavement on Black men and women. Additionally, it is Jacobs' telling of the affect of slavery on White women that is equally touching. Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a must read and the Norton Edition provides readers with essays that will help students and writers further understand the text on many analytical levels.

This was AMAZING. You have to actually keep reminding yourself that this incredible woman is writing about her own life and her own real experiences. I've not long finished reading The Help, and this was like a far more graphic version. I can only be inspired by Harriet's unbelievable and unwavering courage to gain freedom for herself and her children.

Sad but great read. It was an amazing look into Harriet's life. I was proud of her being able to escape from slavery and from that horrible man, and being able to make a better life for her children.

Couldnt put it down

I finished this book in two days. I simply couldn't put it down. This narrative is highly detailed and allows the reader to visualize everything Linda went through.
