Binbir gece masallarından alınan ilhamla yazılmış, Dr. Faustus karakterini anımsatan ve hep daha fazlanın peşinde koşan Vathek...

I'm not entirely sure why this book is called gothic. I'm just glad it's over.

This is an adventure novel in the style of 1001 nights, and orientalism fetishisation is so incredibly apparent all the way throughout. It makes it quite off putting and at times feels like the author is just putting words on a page without any sense.

Vathek’s a novel filled with excesses, exuberant scenes, deplorable characters, and, as the discussion questions say it at the end, there is no hero (although Joe R. Lansdale said Vathek is a hero in the introduction; I think I missed something, because I differ.) This makes it a unique novel and that surprises you at all times. A Gothic novel different to all you expect.

A nice and short little gothic novel with plenty of that good old terror and horror the genre is known for. My only major complaint is that Beckford seemed to always pull his punches. Whenever an innocent is about to suffer, he contrives some deus ex machina to spare the readers.

While not as well written, if you liked the Castle of Otronto you will probably like Vathek.

Oh good lord! Blasphemy! Descriptive set piece! Blaspheming! Prolonged list. Dalliances with concubines! Blaspheming! Set piece. Helllllll!!!! Weird relationship with mom! Possible incest!

This is basically a big-budget movie epic and it's god damn insane. I have no idea what to do with it.
