Okay now we're getting good! Book 2 introduces the best character in this entire series - Josh Derwent. The relationship between partners, Derwent and Kerrigan is at the centre of this exceptional long-running series and it just gets better with each book. Do yourself a favor and dive into this one.

So glad I gave this author another go, as I enjoyed this second Maeve Kerrigan novel a lot more than the first.

Still a flawed, and all the more realistic for it, character, with a silly little crush on her superior officer. I like how the supporting characters are being fleshed out too, so hopefully we will see more of them in future novels.

The love interest also seemed more relevant this time around, with Maeve struggling with how to be with the man she's falling for, whilst also not wanting to be the stereotypical token female hire in a male team.

A young girl disappears after a night out at an illegal club, sex offenders are being found dead - are the cases connected?  No huge surprises but a couple of twists and turns along the way, and taut prose keeps the pages turning, even though this is a fairly long novel.  The couple of chapters written from Rob's point of view again seemed like the author was struggling to get something across in the narrative and didn't quite work, but more successful than the ending of the previous novel.

I will keep reading this series for sure.

Being a story about a murder spree makes this novel quite gritty. But, I must say there were twists I never saw coming.
Maeve's personal experiences during this novel kept my interest as well. It was diverting, but not distracting.
Definitely not for young readers. But, if you like a good police procedural, this should be a good fit.

This got off to a slow start but it's a solid follow-up to The Burning and past a certain point there was lots going on and plenty to hold your interest. Some dark themes here, it leaves you feeling quite bleak by the end. But I plan to continue with this series!
