What a wonderful little gem - particularly for Spanish speakers/readers. This book is brimming with GGM's best: a colourful and deep understanding of the *Colonised-Latin-America vibes*, historically rich world building and sincere yet completely unreal characters, (crazy forms of) love, pain, magic and hate... all while just writing an overall incredibly creative and fun (to read!) story.

Garcia-Marquez is able to make the grotesque parts of being human sound so beautiful.
There were times I had to do a double-take because the prose was so incredibly descriptive, yet the situation a bit disgusting
. This is my second book of his and he has become one of my favorite authors!

Marques’ mastery of language shines here, even in translation. My first introduction into his work, and hopefully not my last. The prologue is the strongest part, but still an enjoyable, clever whole

The “love story” at the heart of this novel is too disturbing to appreciate its merits.

The main thing that carried this book for me was García Márquez's writing, which like in his other books I've read I find dense but aesthetic and satisfying in how he unravels the details piece by piece.

To be honest whenever I read a blurb after reading one of his books I'm always like huh, that's what happened, but I managed to get some enjoyment out of my own interpretation despite apparently not fully grasping what is going on lol

The plot centers around a girl Sierva María who is bitten by a rabid dog and the community decides she is possessed by a demon. She is locked up in a convent and a priest is given the task to save her. He becomes infatuated and obsessed with Sierva María.

Near the end of the book is a series of scenes of the two of them hanging out secretly in her cell kissing and professing their love to each other. The writing was rich and beautiful which I was not at all able to enjoy because it was a relationship between an adult and a minor. I didn't feel like the book particularly critiqued the priest for being a paedophile or justified why it was necessary for the plot - she could have easily been a young woman to a similar effect.
