This was an interesting book but a very confusing one that took me three months to finally finish. The world and magic system are fascinating but I don’t think this author’s writing style is for me.

Things were often convoluted when they didn’t need to be. The order events happened or actions took place was often extremely confusing and disorienting. I found myself constantly whispering “what?” as I read, and not in a biting-my-nails way.

Also this girl needs a dictionary and better proofreading. “Petrified rock” and “the side of his profile“ are redundant. It’s saying the same thing twice. It’s the same thing as writing “rock rock” and “the side of the side of his face.”

This book is so confusing and I usually don't mind when information is held back from the reader but it was difficult to understand some of the revelations in the story since there were no hints that it was a revelation in the first place. Plus the characters are extrememly unlikable. The MC is ok but the men are all pretty awful.

there is something about the way that washington writes that is so addicting, it digs its claws in me and refuses to let go, so i didn't hate this book ... but i can't say i necessarily liked it

i thought the premise was interesting, but the execution was just lacking. the worldbuilding left me a little confused, i'm still not entirely sure what's going on with the magic system or the world in general. i didn't care all that much for our FMC, although by the end i was a little more fond of her, i think that was mostly because calder was definitely my favorite.

at the end of this book i can't say i care all that much about the plot or the characters, and yet i will be continuing the series because ... i am curious about how this relationship is going to develop into romance from what it currently is
