And this is it for me and the Outlander series.
There is a section in the Outlandish Companion where Diana talks about authors who do so much research and then make their readers "pay" for it. Meaning, if the author read about it, she's going to put it in the book, regardless of how much it contributes to the actual story.
I think that Diana is now doing the same. I've been a loyal fan of hers since I first read Outlander, but I'm done. I can't deal with an endless series where just because she's now researching the whole damn War of Independence we need to find out about what a soldier's buttons say or whatever the next cute bit of minutiae she stumbled upon.
I don't feel like "paying" for it anymore. I didn't even buy this book because I was so wary of how it would turn out, and it was pretty much as I'd dreaded. Chapter upon chapter filled with hundreds of characters I don't even care about. I don't think I'll even request the future books from the library. Yes, books, because honestly, this whole scam of "oh, just one more book" has worn me out. First it was a trilogy; then it was six books, three for the Uprising and three for the New World; oh wait, it was eight books - oh, Diana just keeps finding more stuff to string us along.
I've already abandoned one series where I got tired of the author writing for herself - the Anita Blake series - and now I'm sad that I'm done with the Outlander series.
If I'm still alive when the last book in the series comes out, I'll go to Borders and see how it ended, but I won't pay with my money or my time any more.

As always a great read from Ms. Gabaldon. I loved every minute. The only thing that kept me from giving this the usual 5 stars was the ending. It felt unfinished to me. Characters left in mortal peril. I know that there will be another book but seriously! What if she never writes it? Not knowing what happens to Jemmy and Roger?!? It was a nice ending to Ian's story but everyone else is left hanging. Knowing I'll have to wait the average of three years to find out what happens to everyone else is a major bummer!

Finally! I got this book before we moved last year, and had set about reading it with my usual delayed-gratification schedule (a chapter a night, as reward for a hard day), but between the move and subsequent difficulties last summer, I never got back to it. I'm immensely glad I finally did, though, as it was chock-a-block with interesting developments in the ever-expanding cast of characters and timeline. Especially at the end. Very, very good stuff.

I am still loving this story and am so mad at the end, especially because I don't have the next book!

I was frustrated with the last couple of books in this series, but this one won me back over. I enjoyed the new storylines and characters that were introduced, especially the Hunters. Seeing Brianna, Roger, and family in modern times is interesting too.

A must read if you're a fan of the series, but in my opinion there is too much time devoted to the Lord John/William storyline. The pacing is sluggish when it comes to those two characters. More time should have been spent with Jamie and Claire, as well as the storyline involving Ian. The ending seems too quick, with several important events being just glossed over. I am not a fan of cliffhangers when it comes to this series.
