Credo che la difficoltà di un fantasy sia creare un sistema mondo che regga e con regole ben definite e Clarke ci è riuscita egregiamente. Il mondo in cui vivono Strange e Norrell è l'Inghilterra dell'800 che lotta contro l'avanzata in Europa di Napoleone. La storia ruota attorno a tre personaggi, due dichiarati nel titolo, Strange e Norrell, il terzo agisce nell'ombra ed è il più pericoloso tra i tre. Il libro costruisce le fondamenta un mattoncino alla volta per arrivare alle ultime duecento pagine con un finale pieno di azione e magia. Bisogna, dunque, avere pazienza di scoprire come funziona questo mondo alternativo in cui un barlume di magia esiste ancora e come si muovono queste forze, per poi arrivare a un finale pieno di emozioni.
Non direi che "Jonathna Strange e il Signor Norrell" sia un libro da divorare in pochi giorni, poichè la storia non è costruita su continui plot twist o scene d'azione che ti tengono con il naso tra le pagine, ma un romanzo che ci faccia compagnia per qualche tempo.
Si conferma la capacità di scrittura superba della Clarke che già avevo avuto modo di apprezzare con "Piranesi".

not at all what I expected for a book on magic, but ended up being a great surprise. It's like reading a 19th century period piece (Sherlock Holmes?). Instead of fantastic, epic battles, it has gentleman magicians discussing magic and practicing it like a scholar. Very interesting portrayal and a great addition to the genre.

I loved the writing style but reading a book centred almost entirely on the male characters, particularly the upper/upper-middle class male characters, was grating a little after a time. When we hit Portugal and Wellington I was out! Loved the writing and may come back to it, I'm just not in the mood at present. I wanted more of Lady P, Arabella, Stephen Black, all those people. And I may have got it if I'd held out. I'll see.

Creo que ha sido el libro que más he tardado en leer en mi vida, teniendo en cuenta que no lo he intercalado con otros y que no he interrumpido su lectura por grandes rachas de tiempo. No habría llegado a la mitad si no hubiera estado tan bien escrito. Clarke es una excelente narradora, la construcción de sus personajes es perfecta. La magia es increiblemente evocadora. Pero es que no pasa nada durante más de tres cuartos del libro. Nada de nada. Simplemente se nos presenta el escenario y el contexto de la ¿acción? que se concentra en las últimas páginas de la novela. Me ha gustado, pero aún no estoy segura de que haya merecido la pena tanto tiempo dedicado a su lectura.
