Well. Ware is nothing if not consistent. As with The Woman in Cabin 10 and The Lying Game, the suspense writer's latest focuses on a woman with troubles in her past who accepts an invitation that she probably should have turned down. But, like the aforementioned books, this one is a fast-moving, suspenseful delight that, yes, has some flaws (the rabbit trail of clues revealing a killer's identity is a little TOO well-lit for me), yet is overall a fun ride.

Ik vond de personages heel aangenaam. Alleen jammer dat het boek pas een thriller werd tijdens de laatst 100 pagina's :)
Verder las hij heel aangenaam.

Ruth Ware has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I am always intrigued and and wondering what is going on through most of her books. This one is no different. I liked the characters, I like the creepy house and the even creepier domestic living there. I was very into this story.

3 stars is a little generous. I really wanted to like it but the pacing was just really not cutting it. Pacing truly makes or breaks a book, particularly a thriller and this took way too long actually getting into the the mystery. Like, it was probably page 100 by the time the story actually started somewhat moving along. And even then, so much of the writing was Hal just running through scenarios, speculating, and reiterating how guilty she felt.
And truly, it wasn’t until the last 50 or so pages that any action started happening. It was an interesting twist, but I don’t think the slow burn beginning did it any favors and didn’t even lay enough clues for it to be worth it.
Overall, Ruth Ware is such a hit or miss author for me. There have been huge misses (lying game, this one) and then some that I really loved (dark dark wood, turn of the key). So bizarre. I wish she were a little more consistent.
