This is the FOURTH time I've read this and I learn something new every time, which is a quality of a truly GOOD book.
The first time I read it was as a student in a 10th grade classroom-- my takeaway: there's a green light at the end of Daisy's dock.
The second time I read it was in preparation to teach it earlier this semester-- my takeaway: wow, there was so much I didn't catch/retain from my first read.
Third time- I read it alongside my students-- my takeaway: what a great tool to encourage critical thinking and help the students look at the world in a new way.
The Great Gatsby on the surface is an interesting story and keeps the reader intrigued with its scandal and murder, but as I've read it I've seen it in entirely new ways. This story provides a lens through which to view modern society. It opens up conversations about social classes, stereotyping, and the things we'll do for love. It allows us to break down the walls that hold us in the classroom and open up our conversation with the outside world. I'm really glad I was able to teach this book and experience it with my juniors.
Fourth time- It never gets old :) My kids loved it and I enjoyed seeing how emotional they were alongside the characters as they followed the plot! Lots of fun.
