The specificity in which this novel tacked the societal struggle and generational trauma surrounding lost and gather wealth is reflected in each of the characters in their own journeys to amass wealth in different ways by their own standards.

I enjoyed the first 250 pages or so, getting a really detailed insight into these characters and their world. But the conflict became repetitive - almost everyone in this book cheats on each other -
and what happens to Leah feels so cruel and mean-spirited on the part of the author that I would have put the book down if I hadn't already read so much of it.

Lee does not write other races very convincingly. Hispanic portrayals were...weird? Insistent use of "hermano" randomly injected into what was otherwise English felt uncomfortable and inauthentic.

I’m disappointed that I didn’t like this book as much as Pachinko. I’d had high expectations of it that were just not met. I don’t know if it’s a product of its time but the way that women were written at times was uncomfortable; I didn’t understand the characters’ motivation (we’re meant to dislike Casey’s dad but by the end it seems like we’re meant to sympathize and like him without his character actually changing; I know that perceptions can change but Casey knew him her whole life and characterized him for the audience in a specific way early on so it was odd that he was then characterized differently later on without any actual growth). There is a lot of cheating throughout the whole story and it didn’t seem to serve a whole lot of purpose. I suppose I liked Casey as a character but I just didn’t get her motivations.

min jin lee is such a compelling writer. i read this slowly because none of the characters are "good." lee explores themes of wealth and culture and its place in american society. each character, so realistically flawed, explores the idea of one's place in society and the happiness (or lack of) through a mixture of culture, religion, and ambition. also
there was no lack of adultery
. i almost didn't want to finish this but it's so hard to stop reading lee's writing. i took points off because i don't think it should have been 600 pages long. the writing is gorgeous but there was too much miscellaneous detail and eventually the amount of irrelevant characters confused me and i got tired. i think her 2nd novel (pachinko) was MUCH better.
