Oh Danny Boy
4 Stars
When New York police captain Daniel Sullivan is arrested for taking bribes, he turns to fledgling PI Molly Murphy for help. Despite Daniel's past actions, Molly cannot leave him to rot in jail and sets out to prove he was framed. Soon she finds herself investigting several leads from horse doping, to illegal prizefighting to missing girls and even a serial killer plaguing the streets of the East Side.
While it has been a while since I read the last book, it is easy to get back into the swing of things.
Molly is a charming heroine, but she is still running around without much knowledge or skill and more often than not stumbles on the truth quite accidentally. Nevertheless, the mystery is intriguing albeit darker than some of the previous cases.
The serial killer plot is disturbing and highlights an issue that persists well into the 21st century, i.e., the idea that murdered prostitutes are somehow less deserving of justice. The eventual explanation is believable, and the climax and resolution are exciting and suspenseful.
Molly and Daniel's relationship remains the weakest aspect of the series. Given his behavior and the events in this book, it is difficult to see how they will be able to reconcile their differences. There really needs to be an excellent amount of groveling if he is to redeem himself.
Overall, it is fun getting back into the series and I look forward to the next installment.

This was the darkest of the Molly Murphy mysteries so far. I enjoyed it, and Molly became even stronger in this one.

I enjoyed much about this book. I liked the multiple interesting women characters and reading about New York City at this time particularly seeing different immigrant groups. However, this was the first book of this series that I read (picked up at a used book store) and it was probably not the best introduction to the series. It referred very heavily to previous book(s?) often without advancing the story of this book. I also felt that things really didn't get rolling until almost halfway through. I still might give the series another chance since I liked the main character a lot, but I will try for one of the earlier books in the series.

Daniel is in jail, for accepting a bribe, and he reaches out to Molly. She's been determined to avoid him, after they were intimate in the last book and she then discovered him with Arabella Norton, his fiancee with whom he'd promised to cut ties, but she relents once she finds out he's in jail. Molly has a hunch his imprisonment is connected to one of the cases he was working on, and she eventually discovers it's due to the
In a sad story line, Molly finds herself pregnant from her last encounter with Daniel. She considers an abortion but winds up leaving the woman's house, unable to go through with it. She's in danger at the end of the book, trying to escape Carter, and winds up having a miscarriage.

Sabella and Molly agree on a great many things, and Sabella can uncover info Molly couldn't find out on her own. In a side plot, Arabella comes to Molly for help locating her BFF who's disappeared - it seems the lady has jilted her fiance and run off with another man, but Arabella doesn't buy it. The cases turn out to be intersected, as the fiance is a police detective named Carter. Arabella's friend is missing because Carter has her killed, not wanting to be committed to her. I am embarrassed that it took me 10 months to read this! I should have learned last year with R is for Ricochet, that, if I leave a book next to my bed, it will take FOREVER to read it. Because I am tired, I am lucky if I read one chapter, and, again because I am tired, I lose interest. This title also seemed to get VERY slow in the middle, and I was never compelled to really delve into it. Today I brought it downstairs to 'the real world', got really interested in the last 100 pages and really liked the ending. Rhys, if you read this, I promise I'll read the next one in a timely manner. LOL
